1. Introduction to incense stick
For Asians, especially Southeast Asian countries, including Vietnam, especially Buddhist and Taoist practitioners, the incense is burned to commemorate numerous occasions. From funerals to special ceremonies to daily prayers, paying respects to ancestors, and warding off bad luck, the practice has become part of their culture.
So ingrained is the practice of burning incense in their daily lives that there are specific colours and types of sticks with varying sizes for almost every occasion.
Some sticks are colored yellow, others red, and once in a while black ones. Thicker sticks are commonly seen during funerals while spiral incense are typically found hanging in temple ceilings.
2. Did the practice originate from Asia?
While incense burning has become a part of the various Asian religious practices for thousands of years, according to historical records, the ancient Egyptians are believed to be the first to invent incense some 3,500 years ago
The practice of incense burning started out as a ritual to scare away evil spirits and inviting benevolent ones to their homes and tombs. Many of these incense also came with aromatic scent which were designed to be pleasant.
3. Incense stick raw material
Raw incense sticks are traditionally made using natural materials such as bamboo. The upper portion of each stick is covered with sawdust paste extracted from wood — a variant of hardwood that burns slower. The reason for using sawdust is because of a great absorbent of fragrance. Moreover, charcoal is also coated on sticks to help it burn and is popularly found in incense sticks produced from Vietnamese. After adding the sawdust and charcoal coating, the sticks are dipped in fragrance oil and are left out to dry for approximately 12 hours..
From common types to funky blends, there are countless variants of incense sticks to choose from, including frankincense, sage, cinnamon, and amber, all among the earliest to be recorded. “When people burned roots and specific types of wood, an aromatic smoke wafted out of the fire, creating the first types of incense. One of them is crystallized from nature, that is frankincense became extremely valuable, even more than gold in some instances,”
